NEWS: Clinical Director to
Present State-Wide Autism Conference for Professionals,
Parents |
|
Mary Christine Remick, Clinical
Director of The Autism Center at Friendship House, has been
selected as a presenter for the 2006 Annual Conference of the
Pennsylvania Council of Children, Youth & Family Services
(PCCYFS). Ms. Remick will present "Building a Comprehensive
ABA Program for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders:
A Demonstration Project" on the opening day of the March 28-30
Conference, to be held at the Wyndham Harrisburg-Hershey
Hotel, Harrisburg. The PCCYFS will celebrate its 30th
anniversary at the Conference, which is entitled "Celebrating
Our Legacy". Ms. Remick's presentation will be a follow-up to
her presentation made in October 2005 at the Friendship House
Fergus T. Monahan Memorial Series, "Autism, Asperger's
Syndrome: Challenges of Today, Answers for
Tomorrow". |
 |
Ms. Remick
responded to a call for presentations by the Conference
Planning Committee, and her proposal was selected after
a rigorous statewide review and competition. The
presentation will center on her work as a licensed
psychologist in establishing an early intensive
behavioral intervention (EIBI) program at Friendship
House, using the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
approach for treatment of children on the autism
spectrum. |
Under Ms. Remick's leadership, The
Autism Center at Friendship House provides intensive,
one-on-one therapy, up to 30 hours a week, for children ages 2
through 5 years.
In addition to the center-based
program, Ms. Remick directs Friendship House at-home and
in-school "wraparound" treatment for older children who are
diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
"I am proud that such
a valued member of our therapeutic team will have the chance
to tell the Friendship House story to a statewide organization
at such a high level," said Friendship House President Robert
H. Angeloni. "I am also very proud to serve as a member of the
PCCYFS Board of Directors," he added.
The PCCYFS is a
statewide organization of private agencies and direct service
providers who serve non-adjudicated, dependent, and delinquent
children in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1976 as the Pennsylvania
Council of Voluntary Child Care Agencies, (PCVCCA), the
organization's overall goal, and adopted by the Board of
Directors, is to work "to enhance the ability of member
agencies in the engagement of children, youth, and families to
improve the quality of their lives and our communities."

SPRING BREAK FOR AUTISM HIGHLIGHTED IN SCRANTON TIMES
Dance proceeds provide "RESPITE" for Autism Families
Autism affects
families in so many ways, ways that only the family itself can
ever see," said Margo Cosgrove, speaking for
herself and husband, Peter. "We are blessed with
a little girl who brightens up our lives each day. We feel
fortunate and truly very lucky, but our family is still
affected. Autism is part of us. We would like to do our part
in helping the children and all the families who face it each
day."
The Cosgrove's were general chairs
for Spring Break. Heather Domiano was auction
chair. Other parents who helped plan the event include
Jennifer and Richard Scott, Melissa Cottone, Susan
Keating, Joe Manley, Tara McHale and Stephanie
Shandra.
The Autism Center at
Friendship House will offer Respite Care to give
parents an opportunity to enjoy a rare night off, or some
quiet time to spend with their other children while their
child with autism is safely cared for by the professionals at
Friendship House. Respite Care is open to all families
affected by autism, regardless of their affiliation with
Friendship House.
The Autism Center at Friendship
House provides care and treatment for children as young as 2
years of age on the Frances Fuller Campus and in programs
offered in the home and school.
