Early Childhood Program

Friendship House’s unique Early Childhood Partial Hospitalization Program treats boys and girls who are at high risk for emotional disorders due to economic hardship, social stresses and developmental delays. These children may struggle with behavioral issues in a traditional preschool setting and will benefit greatly from a structured and therapeutic setting.

The primary goal of this program is to decrease a child’s behavioral and emotional problems, teach healthy and socially acceptable behavior and forms of expression so that she or he can find success in the daily activities and routine of home, school and community.  A variety of services are available to each child depending on individual needs and psychiatric recommendation.  These include individual and family therapy, diagnostic assessment, medication and community support programs.

The program at Friendship House helps such children develop age-appropriate skills critical for their continued growth and learning. Each child's treatment plan is developed with the goal of preparing the child to be ready to enter kindergarten on track with their peers.  Interaction and participation of the parent(s) or guardian is of utmost importance in the child’s treatment and growth.  We encourage our parents to visit our program, to assist with developing consistent interventions,  as well as strengthening and further developing their parenting skills.

This program is available for preschool children ages 2 ½ to 5 at the Shirley Hollenberg Center at 1615 East Elm Street in Scranton and 190 Delaware Street in Honesdale.  The program operates 6 hours per day, 5 days per week all year long and collaborates with other early childhood programs as needed.  Transportation is provided to and from home.

Referrals can be made by family, school or primary care physician to the Admissions Department
