Autism center nets $7,680 cut of pizza sales

Pizza by Pappas raised a whole lot of dough for Northeast Regional Autism Center at Friendship House last week.

Pappas conducted a two-day fundraiser for the center, donating 50 percent of pizza sales on April 27 and 28. Owner Bill Sheakoski had set a goal of selling 1,000 pizzas. In the end, Pappas filled orders for 1,592 pizzas, raising $7,680.88 for the cause.

"We did fantastic," Mr. Sheakoski said. The place was really busy both days, he said, adding that the second day got hectic.

The shop received orders for 989, which, he said, worked out to one every 36 seconds during the 10 hours the business was open. However, it also meant the restaurant was running about an hour behind in filling the orders, he noted.

"Pizza by Pappas would like to thank everyone that helped support our Pizza for Autism Fundraiser. We were overwhelmed by the turnout and unfortunately fell behind in getting many of the orders out in a timely manner. For that, we apologize. We definitely appreciated the patience and understanding so many of you showed us," Mr. Sheakoski said.

The biggest single order was from Cinram for 113 pizzas, he said. Other big orders included those from Geisinger, Boscov's, The Times-Tribune and Rock 107, he said.

"It's something we're all proud of," Mr. Sheakoski said. "The staff really stepped up to it."

One thing Mr. Sheakoski might change is to switch to a separate day for corporate orders to improve the flow and get the pizzas delivered in a more timely fashion.

"I'd like to do it again," he said. "It couldn't have been possible without the support of our customers."
